While granite countertops are very durable material, there are things that you should avoid doing in your kitchen in order to protect your countertops. Granite countertops are a porous material and with porous materials come things that you need to watch for and be aware of in order to protect your surface and family.
What should I avoid?
Because your countertops are porous, they absorb the substances that are left on them. If you work with raw meat directly on the surface of the countertops you are risking the bacteria being absorbed into the stone. Not only is this not good for the surface, this is dangerous for your family.
Raw meat is something that has to be taken care of very carefully. Certain meats if consumed undercooked can cause serious illness. If you place raw meat on your countertops and it is absorbed into the stone, it can also rub off on other food products that you leave on the surface.
Granite is a strong material that can withstand a lot. However, if you leave spilled substances on the surface for long periods of time you are risking the stone absorbing some of the liquid. When the substance is left on the countertop it makes the seal that has been applied to the stone more weak. The seal is what is protecting the stone from stains, and rings. If the seal is worn off the stone will easily stain and you will start to see many marks on the surface. The best advice is to clean up after spills when they happen so the stone is not given the opportunity to try and absorb the liquid itself.
This may come as a surprise but, your knives will thank you if you choose not to use them directly on your granite surface. The granite stone is very strong and can easily withstand the knives blade without leaving any marks. You knife is what will suffer from cutting directly on the stone. As the knife blade is rubbed across the stone it is dulled by the strong surface. It is highly suggested that you use a cutting board in order to protect your knife and keep them strong for a great period of time.
Granite countertops provide many benefits. They are strong and beautiful inside of your kitchen. While they are strong, there are things that you want to avoid when you choose to have stone countertops in order to protect your family and products.
